Is Your Sunscreen Damaging Your Skin?

Brightsun_fullWe all know the importance of sunscreen.  It protects us from the harmful rays of the sun.  But, your choice of sun protection may be causing more harm than good.

Clients who have more sensitive skin have brought to our attention that they experience “rashes” or even “blistering” on their face and chest areas after applying very well known brands of sunscreen.  I experienced this as well.

There are physical sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. Physical sunscreens reflect the sun’s rays, while chemical sunscreens absorb them.  Chemical sunscreens will contain ingredients such as Avobenzone, Octisalate, and Octocrylene to name a few.

If you experience any irritation, you may want to purchase a physical sunscreen, which would contain Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, or a combination of both.  The only negative side to this type is that it tends to be a little thicker and casts a tint or a white residue.  Cozi is a brand that I use and can be purchased at Ulta.  It is a little more expensive, but the damage you have been experiencing from the chemicals in other sunscreens may cause irreversible damage.

Regardless of which sunscreen you choose, it is important to wear it everyday…even during winter months.
